Lyricist: Monique Jordan
When I wrote these lyrics, I wanted to capture that “code” we use to protect our peace. Sometimes it’s easier to talk about “you” than to admit “I am struggling with this.” It’s a reminder that while we are standing our ground and giving time time , the most important person we have to be honest with is ourselves.
“If You Was Me” explores the duality of personal identity and public perception. It features the pivotal lyric: “I’m speaking in code but I hope you hear me, ’cause when I say you, I really mean me,” . This track is a soulful acknowledgment that the boundaries we set for others are often the same ones we are learning to set for ourselves.
